Agroecological Chain

The maxim that says that the flapping of wings of a simple butterfly could influence the natural course of things and, thus, perhaps cause a typhoon on the other side of the world, is real.

If I’m not mistaken, I’ve already started a story like this and I believe that certain things should be repeated until they become understood by the majority.
A few days ago, a very important movement began so that the changes, so desired by all, are real: The strike of truck drivers who protest the abusive rise in fuel prices.
Strikes, historically, are fundamental for our rights and duties to be written and to shape our way of existing and resisting the world. Through them, we have already achieved better working conditions, overthrown oppressive governments, we have won the right to have an opinion and be able to say what we think.

Of course, when we are on strike, we run several risks and this one in particular is leaving the cities short of supplies. It all started with fuels. Giant queues at the gas stations, as everyone fears their lack, a reduction in the number of buses available for public transport, stoppage of school transport, among other measures that will certainly be taken by city administrators. But what about the butterfly? So, if there is no truck to take fuel, there is no fuel to transport food to the big markets and if there is no food in the big markets, there is no food in the small ones too and as a result the population suffers from the lack of several important products for the day the day. Simple but complex, as it may end tomorrow and the impact is small, but it may not.

I believe that the struggle of many, to increase food consumption coming from local production, is based on facts like these, which can directly impact the way we live.
Ubatuba has a large and very good network of foods produced here, organic, accessible and that do not depend on trucks or mediators to reach the population’s table.
I feel that there is a greater need for information, so that everyone has the opportunity to know this self-sufficiency and can enjoy and value these products. Obviously, because it is seasonal, organic, produced according to what the land offers, there is a limit, but it really reaches that limit, that we can sleep peacefully, without the lack of some products in the markets being a cause for nightmares.

For Silvia Moreira Rojo Vega – Collaborator of the Caiçara Agroecological Network and Scientific Researcher at the São Paulo Agribusiness Technology Agency – Ubatuba Research and Development Unit (APTA – UPD), the network is a community that prioritizes the production and responsible consumption of products organic, which values and respects local trade, which believes in the strength that exists in creating a subsistence cycle. We ended up putting aside the culture of going to the fair and understanding how the seasonality of vegetables works, the different ways of preparing and consuming them, makes a difference for the population in the social and economic spheres. If we stop buying eggs at the supermarket to buy directly from a local, organic and fresher and healthier producer, the supermarket will not feel so much impact, the producer will. With this money, your family will be financially better prepared and socially more balanced, the reasoning applies to all other segments; making money circulate in the city itself, brings more security to the population.

It is not difficult, just think about the society you want for your descendants. And as much as I think the attitude of the striking truck drivers is correct, however much I consider it an important process for everyone, the issue here is not just political but public health, enough to eat poison, enough to feed the wealth of those he is already rich. It is not just about equality but about justice.

The Caiçara Agroecological Network fairs take place:

For now, the fairs are suspended due to the Covid Pandemic19, the calls are being made virtually, by whatsapp.
